So I received an email from a big fan, Ken, of my man Ernie Vincent last week requesting an autographed image for his wall back in Spring Hill Fla.. Nothing unusual about this, no problem. As I communicated back and forth with Ken over the week, he confided in me about the “challenging” times he has been having health wise that basically have kept him dependent and home bound and have for 20 months. nofp_ernie_vincent_selection_jm_082413_001I told Ken not to worry about any charges, that I'll see Ernie Saturday mornin and would ship to him next week, no worries. As I thought about it a little more, I called Ernie and explained the situation and suggested that we take this to another level and not only brighten Ken's day, but do something special that would really impact Ken's world. In addition to the autographed print, I suggested we make Ken a live musical video card with a personal message, which Ernie thought was a fantastic idea. So while hangin out with Ernie at the studio/gallery this morning we made the video which came out great. Much love and positive vibs to Ernie Vincent's #1 Fan, Ken H. back in Spring Hill Florida.
On September 10th, 2013, my good friend Cyril Neville aka “The Uptown Ruler”, will be releasing his new solo CD “Magic Honey” (Ruf Records). Under the direction of The Thunderbird Management Group (Rueben Williams), this will be the third straight CD I have had the pleasure of doing the marketing photography work for Cyril, the first being Cyril's “Brand New Blues” release back in 2009 followed by “The Essential Cyril Neville 1994-2007”, in addition to the Royal Southern Brotherhood's self titled debut release where Cyril fronts the new super group along with Devon Allman, Mike Zito, Charlie Wooten and Yonrico Scott. cyril_neville_magic_honey_coverOn Magic Honey, Neville is backed by Cranston Clements (guitar), “Mean” Willie Green (drums), Carl Dufrene (bass) and Norman Caesar (keyboards). The record also features guest appearances from legendary Allen Toussaint (piano) and Dr. John (organ), as well as his Walter Trout and his Royal Southern Brotherhood bandmate Mike Zito (guitar). I got a good taste of Magic Honey during the recording sessions at Studio in the Country last fall and needless to say the record spews some serious fiya, from a cover of Rush's “Workin Man”(Credit Omari, Cyril's son for turnin Cyril on to RUSH) to what I would consider one of the more timeless, low down and nasty funked out New Orleans groove infused cuts that I haven't heard in a while, “Right Back on You”, nothing less than a hard core quintessential example of Cyril's undeniable influence and contribution to the actual d.n.a. of what we all know as New Orleans Funk which oozed out of the New Orleans music scene starting in the late 60's by front man Art Neville and the Meters, who rounded out there lineup with none other than percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville. Cyril then launched into a 2 decade plus funkathon with New Orleans musical ambassadors The Neville Brothers. Oh, and by the way, Cyril and the Meter's were most recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, need I say more?? Back in April of 2010 I was doing a architectural marketing photo shoot for a local master carpenter. Along with all of the macro shots that were taken around the property, I continually found myself admiring the unbelievable original detail work and restoration on all of the trim and molding in the house. After I finished the “job” I headed back to the room where all of these pieces of art were laid out and captured a few images. So when a client contacted me a few weeks ago looking for something unique that had to do with New Orleans architecture, I knew I had exactly what she wanted One of the services I provide to clients is creating a to scale digital layout showing exactly what the art will look like on the wall prior to and purchase decisions.
I received a call from Chris Joseph of Threadhead Records Wednesday morning asking if I had time to go over to Piety Street Studios to document a day of recording for the “Nine Lives” Musical written by Paul Sanchez and Coleman deKay. Once Chris started reeling out the names of the performers, including Allen Toussaint, Wendell Pierce, John Boutte, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, and so on…my only response was, “I’ll be there in a half hr or so” as I live 3 blocks from the studio. That was definetely a day I will not forget anytime soon, as one of my favorite things to shoot is the creative process in the studio.
